Pyramid
Toltec-Chichimec
During our travels, Maureen Seewald Smith and I went to Cholula expressly to see the "gods of Cholula". When we got there the skulls had been taken away "for maintenance". So, we weren´t able to get any photos of the gods. We only got to see the empty glass coffin. Also the museum was closed and so we missed out on that as well.
However, while visiting the pyramid, we met a local man and woman, native to Cholula. I asked them about the gods. They told us that according to their legend, two gods came to earth, a male and a female. They came to teach the people of Cholula mathematics, medicine, architecture, etc.. However, later on some other gods came down (who were giants) and they killed the two gods. The people of Cholula kept the skeletons of their gods in a glass coffin at the great pyramid.
It´s interesting that the skulls of the gods of Cholula somewhat resemble the skulls of the gods of the Lacandons. It is also interesting to note that the Lacandons also have a legend that claims that other gods came down and tried to kill their gods.
Later on we found out that the gods of Cholula can now be viewed at the Museum in Puebla.
